Pompeii City Break – 3 Day Itinerary

My hubby and I recently spent a wonderful week in Italy…3 days in Pompeii at a gorgeous hotel *Bosco de Medici* (click here for my blog post on the hotel) and then the remaining days were spent on the Amalfi coast (with the rest of Italy it would seem lol) 😀 August + Italy = BUSY BEACHES – who knew? Pah ha ha ha! 😉

We went to Pompeii with absolutely no plans other than to visit the ruins but we ended up having the most wonderful 3 days so I thought I would share our itinerary with you 🙂

When we go away, even on a city break, we like to have some relaxation time as well as sightseeing time so you will find some downtime in this itinerary. As you can see from below, the Hotel – Bosco de Medici was the perfect place for this downtime 🙂

The Evening of Arrival

We took an afternoon flight from London to Naples on the Friday, picked up our car at Avis (not an uneventful or pleasant experience…but is it ever when hiring a car?…answers on a postcard…or just in the comments below 😉 ), we drove for around an hour to the hotel and arrived at 9.30-10pm hungry and tired. We decided to drop our bags at reception, book a table at the restaurant and head straight over there (2 mins from reception) for some much needed chill out, food and vino!

The restaurant at the hotel is lovely, the food is excellent (more in my separate blog post here), and the hotel is part of a vineyard so the wine is delicious!!! So delicious that we are hoping to have some shipped over (which I believe you can only do if you have been a guest at the hotel).

After dinner, we went straight to the hotel room to shower and sleep 🙂

Day One

Chilling, mooching & lots of delicious food

After breakfast, we spent the morning lounging around the gorgeous pool staring in awe at the amazing views of Vesuvius in the background ❤

We then popped over to the restaurant at lunchtime for some more delicious food and wine and spent a couple of hours enjoying a leisurely Italian style lunch 🙂

We chose to share a pasta and salad dish and both were delicious.

After lunch we went back to the pool for a couple of hours to snooze in the sun and swim off the lunch 😉 Taking things at our own pace when we’ve spent practically a day travelling, is a must for us.

Pompeii city centre is only a 10-15 minute walk away from the hotel so at around 4pm we got showered and changed and decided to have a little explore. We walked around the little streets and market stalls for a few hours, stopping off for some gelato (of course)!

For dinner, we found a lovely restaurant called Pizza & Pasta right in the centre and had… yep you guessed it… pizza and pasta (and beer) 😉 So good!! The restaurant was so popular by the time we left, there was a queue along the road waiting for tables!!

After dinner, we went back to the hotel to chill in the restaurant with a bottle of wine and some playing cards (as you do)!

Day Two

Pompeii Ruins & Tour of the Vineyard with Three Course Lunch

After breakfast, we walked into Pompeii to visit the ruins. We have been there before (when we first got together ❤ ) but it was just as spectacular the second time around.

We walked around the ruins for about 3 hours (you could spend the whole day there but it was August, 35 degrees and super busy) and then headed back to the hotel for our tour of the vineyard and of course, lunch 🙂

The walk around the vineyard was so interesting, we learned a lot about the history of the land, the hotel and the wine (I won’t share everything, otherwise you won’t need to go and I really hope you do).

We then went to the restaurant to sample the four wines that the vineyard produces (two white and two red), all of which were delicious and sampled during the beautiful three course lunch.

Needless to say, after a busy morning and a large lunch, we spent the rest of the afternoon chilling out by the pool 🙂

Day 3

When we first arrived at the hotel, we saw that they had a tour of Vesuvius and decided we’d like to do this, so we booked it for the Monday morning (our last day).

As we were leaving Pompeii on this day, we had breakfast, checked out and then popped the bags in the car before the coach arrived at around 8.45am to take us up to the top of Vesuvius.

It was only a 30 minute drive and we got as far up the mountain as cars were allowed before we climbed off the bus and needed to walk the rest. It’s very steep (as you would imagine) but the group broke up and everyone went at their own pace. The ‘tour’ was really only a coach ride which was fine with us as we prefer to do our own thing anyway (unsociable gits)!

We had around an hour and half to wander up the volcano and have a mooch before making our way back to the coach. The views were phenomenal… you can see Pompeii, the Amalfi Coastline, Naples… it was absolutely breathtaking 🙂

We arrived back at the hotel at around 12.30pm and we had a bite to eat in the hotel cafe where they do sandwiches etc. and then hit the road in our little hire car and made our way to Maiori on the Amalfi Coast.

If you are going to head home on this day, book an evening flight and you’d have plenty of time to get back to Naples airport after this little tour.

So that was our weekend in Pompeii 🙂 I really hope it helps you plan your perfect city break 🙂

With love, Tash ❤ x
